A friend told me that faith journaling helped her, so I decided to try this practice because something was missing from my life. The journal helped. Over weeks and months, I found that I was less anxious and much more content.
If the thought of a faith journal intrigues you, try the practice. Not only do you have a place for Bible study, you can record your prayers and prayer requests as well as your gratitude and insights.
When I mentioned the practice to our writing group, members were intrigued. They wanted to know where and how to do it.
Faith journaling: where and how will you journal?
People create a faith journal for many reasons and in many different ways. This blog post suggests a wonderful reason to begin. Your daily writing can remind you that God is faithful:
One day, we’ll need a reminder of God’s faithfulness. A journal can hold a lifetime of reminders.
The where… Will you create your journal on paper, or in a computer file? The benefits of using a computer file are that you can access and search your journal easily. On the other hand, if the creative benefits of handwriting appeal to you, choose a notebook, or a ring binder.
Initially, I used the Notes app on my computer, but found it distracting, even though I turned off Notifications. Something was missing. So I turned to paper, a large blank hardcover notebook. The heavy paper meant that I could use watercolors easily and different water and alcohol markers. Painting and doodling as part of my quiet time was not only relaxing, it meant I looked forward to my Bible study and journaling each day.
How do you practice the process?
Another popular question: do you need to practice each day? That depends on you; on your needs. I’ve found that when I’m busy, daily writing and doodling gives me a break — rather than impinging on my time, my Bible study and journal seem to extend time.
A friend told me that her faith journaling took up a few minutes each morning during the week, but expanded on weekends. She feels that she’s become a different person via those few minutes. “Nothing bothers me as much, and I’m more likely to see opportunities than barriers. The kids are calmer too; they like to color while I’m journaling.”
Your process can be simple. Try this. Copy out a Bible verse or a chapter, then meditate or pray on it. A friend decided that she’d copy out the complete Bible as her practice. Another friend uses daily faith prompts she received from church; she copies them into her journal, then sketches a small scene. She believes that her sketches help her to remember the verses. She said: “I had a disagreement with a co-worker. Before, I’d get upset and stew about it for hours. Instead, I just nodded and smiled, and went on my way. A few hours later, the co-worker apologized… We’re going to lunch together now.”
Faith journaling is fun and creative
“It’s like spending time with a friend,” a member of our group said to me. “I can bring all my worries into my journal. It’s amazing how many of them seem to resolve themselves.”
